How to check a moving company
A moving company is identified by a USDOT number, not by a van color or a Facebook page. Start with the number printed on the estimate.
Start with the document, not the brand
Ask for a written estimate that shows a legal name and a USDOT number. Trade names (DBA) collide. Legal names collide too, which is why the number matters.
Enter that USDOT in IMMERVEIL Mover Check, then open the FMCSA Company Snapshot and confirm the record still matches before you pay a deposit.
What you are looking at
The MCMIS Company Census File is an official FMCSA dataset. It is not a review site. A blank safety rating is not a hidden F. A Satisfactory code is not an IMMERVEIL endorsement.
Confirm whether the company is listed as interstate, whether a household-goods cargo flag is present, and whether the name on the estimate matches the census legal name.
SAFER, MOTUS, and which record is current
FMCSA publishes the same company through more than one system. The SAFER Company Snapshot is the long-standing lookup page. MOTUS is FMCSA’s newer registration system, and its operating-authority history is published as an open dataset (AuthHist). Third-party guides in 2026 describe SAFER as being phased out in favor of MOTUS; IMMERVEIL does not assert a shutdown date, only that both may show you a record and MOTUS is where authority changes now land.
IMMERVEIL Mover Check reads the census file for identity and the MOTUS AuthHist dataset for authority, collapsing the history to the latest row per docket and authority type. If a SAFER link on a record stops resolving, the MOTUS authority list on the same record is the current source.
What this does not prove
Registration is not a character reference. Absence from a snapshot is not proof of fraud. For current operating authority and insurance, use FMCSA’s own tools, not a screenshot of this page.
